Welcome to the Department of Information Communication Technology at Thika Technical Training Institute. The department opened its doors in the year 2006 as a section in Mathematics and Computer department. The first cohort of students started their journeys towards obtaining a qualification in information technology at diploma and certificate the same year. The department runs three Diploma programs: Information Communication Technology, Information Sciences (Modular) and information studies (TEP) and two craft certificate (Information Technology and Information Studies). Three other programs to be mounted in the department in January 2021 include: diploma in information science level six (TVET-CDACC), certificate in Information communication technology level six (TVET-CDACC) and Certificate in Library Information Science level five (TVET-CDACC). The department vision is to be a centre of excellence in value based ICT Education and training.
The objective of the department is to prepare students for a successful career in ICT and information science industry, Research and Academics to meet the growing needs for ICT and information science personnel in both private and public sectors. The department has qualified and dedicated staffs who strive to impart knowledge and training of the highest standard. Industrial Attachments are an excellent way to help the student learn more about a career, find out what it’s like to work in your potential career, gain valuable experience to build your resume get to know employers and make a solid network receive credit for real world experience.
An Industrial Attachment is a structured, credit-bearing work experience in a professional work setting during which the student applies and acquires knowledge and skills. It involves the application of learned skills in an organization related to the students’ major. An Industrial Attachment should challenge the student to examine the values of the organization involved in the experience, and to assess the student's education as it relates to the Industrial Attachment.Each department at THIKA technical has a departmental ILO who prepares letters for students from the department who will proceed for industrial attachment atleast three months before the students proceed for attachment.The letters are then put in the dhelpepartmental e-mail and the students are then given the email address and the password.They can now download the letter and edit it to suit each student by name admission number and the place each wants to request for attachment.This letter is then taken to the office of the ilo for signing and stamping.
The ILO (Industrial and Liaisons Office) deals with the placement and assessment of the students in different organizations and companies for their industrial attachment. The student identifies the areas where he/she would like to be attached and gives this information to the office which writes to the organization an introductory letter about the student. The office also helps students who have failed to get an attachment by searching one for such students.NITA helps get attachments
As one of the core resources to students and lecturers as well, we have a well-stocked library that plays a major role in ensuring that our students get resources required to attain their goals. Our library is stocked with many and up to date books that any lecturer and student finds very helpful we have enough books for all courses to ensure uniformity in developing our students.
We also have small libraries in various departments where the books in this department belongs to the individual department. These departmental libraries assist the students in ensuring that they get the books they are looking for.
Other than the books, our library is very rich with contents from other sources. These includes journals, publications, thesis, and newspapers among other materials for learning. The issuing and returning of borrowed books has been simplified by having library management system for issuing, cataloging, circulation, reminders and OPAC search. We would like to welcome you to come and enjoy as you gain knowledge.
The library has a sitting capacity of about 100 students with a collection of more than 7000 copies of materials. It is also Wi-Fi enabled so that students can access the
internet any time. We have skilled personnel who ensure that the library is open from 0800hrs to 2200hrs on Mondays to Fridays and 0800hrs to 1300hrs on Saturdays.
We have plans to expand the current seating capacity to 800, subscription to e-resources, library security system, smart card scanners and system backup. This has been applauded by the library staffs , lecturers and the students whose reading culture is of essence not only to the Thika community but, Kenyan region.

The department is in charge of managing and improving the image and reputation of our institution. As the Public relations Officer, my work involves gaining understanding and support for our stakeholders as well as influencing opinions and perceptions. In the educational sector, just like other organizations, public relations officers are required for the sake of day to day activities and smooth running of the institutions. The major roles of the PRO is managing the public perception of the institution and creating a favorable image by doing the following:
1. Maintaining community relations
The department have a duty of creating good relationship between the institution and the community around. This mainly aims at maintaining harmony and peace with the neighborhood thereby promoting understanding and favorable relation with the public at large.
2. Improving internal relations
Internal public relations are the activities done within the institution to maintain good rapport and smoothen communication. This is achieved by doing the following:
• Improving sense of cohesion among the members of staff both teaching and support staff.
• Providing positive information regarding our institution’s ability to provide challenging and meaningful tasks.
• Giving clear communication about our institution’s intentions
3. Positive relations with the alumni
nowadays, an institute maintains special alumni relations and ties. As a Department, we are in the process of creating cells through which we shall keep in constant contact with our trainees who have graduated and are doing marvelous jobs in the industry. This is aimed at assisting the current trainees get industrial placements to the upcoming batches through their contacts. Also alumni play crucial role as they have their own interests in their Alma matters.
4. Expanding the number of applicants in our institution.
The public relation department has the duty of advertising the institution in order to increase the number of applicants hence growing of the institution. This is done through use of social media sites, blogs, radios, newspapers and broadcast of our institute’s activities among others. The sum total of all these media presence is to make Thika Technical Training Institute better known hence expanding our population as it will attract more applicants.
5. Educational public assistance
As a department, we endeavor to also assist our trainees and work with their parents, guardians and various groups with an aim of improving the progress of our institution. The department has a responsibility of distributing news letters containing information about campus events, building and maintaining ties with the alumni, lecturers, staff and students.
6. Crisis management
Just like any other organization, the education institutes also have their ups and downs which they need to cover up. This is done by the public relations department through crisis management hence maintaining good image of the institution.
Higher education institutions are becoming increasingly aggressive in their marketing activities to convey an image that is favorable in all aspects beneficial to the public, prospective students, employers, funders among others. It is therefore the responsibility of the public relations department to advertise positively and make the institution known worldwide.
8. Organizing large scale events and holding public meetings.
The public relations department in the institutions is in charge of organizing meetings with different stakeholders. During the meetings, achievements of the institutions are made clear to the public... These events may include: cultural events, donation drives, meetings, launches, fashion shows, sport events, organizing company’s ‘open days’ for visitors, customers, and investors, organizing business exhibitions among others.
9. Creating and maintaining positive image
Public relations department plays a crucial role in maintaining positive image of the institution. The department does this through: press conferences regarding any new developments in the institution, press release concerning the activities, branding of the institution, maintaining contacts with the people who benefits the institution in any way, for example: the media people, government Agencies, industry and the alumni.
10. Advertising The Institution
People usually trust public relation agency more than the advertising agency as they know the latter has been paid to glorify a client. The role of a public relations department therefore includes highlighting the positive image about the institution, including the history of the institute, courses offered and the achievements of the students and the faculties .
There is need for all educational institutions to create a public relations department as it will help in smoothening progress of the institution, maintain good relations, advertising the institution as well as managing reputations.
Therefore public relations officers ought to be regarded as a pre-requisite for the effective functioning of educational institutions..
